The meeting of the State Variety Approval Committee was held at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on February 26, 2019, under the Chairmanship of Dr Sutantar Kumar Airi, Director of Agriculture, Punjab. Proposals of five crop varieties were approved for general cultivation in the state of Punjab. These include, Pusa Basmati 1718, a bacterial blight resistant variety, with average plant height of 121 centimeter and maturity period of 144 days after seeding. It has good cooking quality and average paddy yield is 17 quintals per acre. Maize hybrid PMH 11 was approved for general cultivation in Punjab. It has well developed root system, matures in 95 days and average yield is 22 quintal per acre. P1844 is hybrid variety of maize that matures in 114 days with average yield of 32 quintals per acre. The SML 1827 variety of summer mungbean variety was approved for general cultivation in Punjab. It is resistant to yellow mosaic disease and matures in 62 days. The average yield is 4.6 quintal per acre. PBN 342 is hybrid variety of napier bajra that sprouts earlier in spring and remains in vegetative growth till the onset of winter. It yields 877 quintal of green fodder per acre.
