CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW DRAWS HUGE CROWDS ON SECOND DAY

The two day annual Chrysanthemum show organized by the Department of Floriculture & Landscaping and Estate Organization at PAU, Ludhiana turned out to be a crowd puller for flower aficionados and nature lovers of the city. A competition among 14 different categories of standard (Japanese) and spray (Korean) chrysanthemum was also held during the show.

Best entries were awarded twelve first prizes, seventeen second prizes and ten third prizes. Among prominent entries, were those from Guru Nanak Public School, DAV School and Delhi Public School. Incurved category, first prize was bagged by Vipul Sareen of Sanjay Gandhi Colony, Ludhiana,, second prize went to Pardeep Kaur of DAV School and Jogeet Singh Sekhon of BRS Nagar. Third position was bagged by Radhey Shyam of DAV School. Similarly, in the intermediate category, First prize was awarded to Jogeet Singh of SBS Nagar, Second prize to Amarjeet of VPO Pamal, Gursharan Kaur of Punjab Mata Nagar and Seerat Singh of SBS Nagar. The third prize in this category went to Rajesh Sareen of Sanjay Gandhi Colony. The Spider class winners were Ram Lal of DPS School and Jogeet Sekhon of SBS Nagar as first and second respectively. Daya Ramof DPS, Piara Singh of Verka Dairy and Lal Ji of DPS were declared first, second and third in the decorative category. The Single and Semi Double Class winners were Daan Bahadur of GNP School, Jogeet Sekhon of SBS Nagar and Vinod Kumar of DAV School as first, second and third respectively. Jogeet Sekhon, Gurwinder Singh Barnala and Rajinder of GNP School were adjudjed first, second and third in the pompom/ button category. Similarly, in the Anemone class, Seerat Sekhon of SBS Nagar, Ram Singh of DAV School and Santosh of GNP School took away first, second and third prizes. Daya Ram of DPS and Ratan Singh of GNP School took away first two positions in the spoon category. Mohinder pal Singh of Maya Nagar and Charandeep Singh of Sarabha Nagar walked away with the prize of “best arrangement of pot” while Ram Lal, Lal Ji of DPS were adjudged second and Arvinder Singh of VPO Chak Kalan, third. In the cuit flowers category, once again Daya Ram of DPS took away the first prize, Radhe Shyam of DAV School second and Ram Lal of DPS School got third prize.

Dr. Jaskaran Singh Mahal, Director of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana, was the Chief Guest at the prize distribution function. Dr. Mahal explained the role of Punjab Agricultural University in the upliftment of agriculture at the National level and in Punjab. Dr. Mahal congratulated the winners and encouraged them to adopt flower cultivation at commercial level by taking help from the experts of Department of Floriculture & Landscaping. Dr. Mahal also emphasized that since demand of flowers is very high in the cities, particularly in the festival season, the growers should adopt floriculture as a profitable venture. He urged the audience to join Certificate Courses in Floriculture & Landscaping started for skill development in the youth for entrepreneurship development. Dr. H.S. Grewal, Head of the Department, while giving the vote of thanks, invited the audience to participate in the Annual Flower Show in the last week of February, 2019.
