Under the aegis of the ‘Association of Agro meteorologists’, Ludhiana chapter, a lecture on ‘Advanced Techniques in Weather Forecasting’ was organized for the faulty and post graduate students of agriculture. The lecture was delivered by Dr Anand Sharma, Director General Meteorology (DGM) –Agromet Advisory Services, IMD, New Delhi. Dr S.S. Kukal, Dean College of Agriculture was the chief guest during the lecture.
Dr Anand Sharma apprised the audience about the latest tools / techniques used by India Meteorological Department (IMD) in forecast of the weather. He gave live demonstration on state of art tools like the use of satellite images, Doppler radar, numerical weather model products etc. He discussed the different components of the agro-advisory services being done by IMD by using the district and block level forecast on temperature, rainfall, cloud cover etc. The importance of the weather forecast and its direct implication on crop production and boosting the income of the farmers was elaborated with practical examples. The problem of suspended pollutants in the atmosphere of New Delhi and its surrounding areas and its impact and remediation was also discussed. The lecture was appreciated by the faculty and the students in which Dr Sharma answered their queries on the technical and practical aspects of weather forecasting. |
