In a proactive initiative to address the pressing issue of paddy residue burning, Punjab Agricultural University's Krishi Vigyan Kendra (PAU-KVK) in Fatehgarh Sahib organized a one-day awareness campaign at Desh Bhagat University in Mandi Gobindgarh. The event, conducted under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, and ICAR-ATARI Zone 1, Ludhiana, saw 130 college students participate.

Dr Vipan Kumar Rampal, Associate Director (Training) of PAU-KVK, shed light on the pivotal role of college students in disseminating awareness regarding the detrimental effects of crop residue burning. He emphasized adopting recommended paddy residue management technologies, elucidating using farm machinery such as MB Plough, rotavator, mulcher, and baler for effective residue management.

Dr Ajay Kumar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science), discussed the significance of soil testing in enhancing soil health. Dr. Arvind Preet Kaur, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), enlightened the students about innovative approaches to utilize paddy straw in vegetable production and mushroom cultivation, thus promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The event also featured a speech and declamation competition organized by Dr Manisha Bhatia, Assistant Professor (Home Science), where participants showcased their advocacy skills. The winners of the competition were duly recognized and awarded, culminating in a gesture of encouragement and appreciation.

Dr H K Sidhu, Dean of the Department of Agriculture and Life Science at Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh, commended the students for their active engagement in the program and urged them to continue their efforts in combatting crop residue burning. Dr. Dalwinderjeet Singh Benipal, a Professor of Agriculture, encouraged students to extend their outreach to farmers, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing agricultural challenges.

Expressing gratitude, Dr Deepinder Pal Singh, Professor in the Agriculture Department, extended heartfelt thanks to the faculty of PAU-KVK for spearheading the initiative and fostering awareness among college students regarding sustainable crop residue management practices.
