Punjab Agricultural University started the College of Home Science in July, 1966 with the help of two USAID experts in Home Science - Dr Edna R Kaufman and Dr Maria S Friesen. Mrs Sushila Dantyagi, a renowned Home Scientist, was the founder Dean of the College. Through its integrated programme of teaching, research and extension, the College grew rapidly, playing a significant role in improving the socio-economic conditions of rural as well as urban families, thereby, giving them opportunity to have a better quality of life. The College of Home Science is a pioneer institution among the Home Science Colleges of State Agricultural Universities that started Post Graduate programmes in all the disciplines of Home Science in the seventies.

To broaden its horizon as a wider institute of learning and excellence for community as whole, it has been renamed as College of Community Science with effect from June, 2019. Community Science is an inter-disciplinary field of knowledge which integrates concepts from Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Social and Environmental Sciences along with its own components of Apparel and Textile Science, Food and Nutrition, Family Resource Management, Human Development & Family Studies and Extension Education & Communication Management. It prepares the individuals to obtain recent scientific information for dealing with real life situations to cope up with everyday problems effectively by providing broad-based, culturally relevant knowledge in different areas of Community Science.

The College has the privilege of having one of the best-equipped laboratories amongst the Community Science Colleges of the country. To facilitate the teaching of highly vocational professional electives, state-of-art infrastructure is provided in Baking, Institutional Management, Textile Testing, Multimedia, Computer Laboratories. The College also has four Experiential Learning Units, one each on Apparel Manufacturing, Bakery and Confectionery, Artistic Creations and Child Care Providers Training. Latest equipment and facilities in the laboratories of the departments impart quality education both at UG and PG level.

Academic programmes and job avenues

The College imparts undergraduate and postgraduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) education in various disciplines of Community Science. It also offers Bachelors' programmes in Nutrition and Dietetics. The Community Science graduates can go in for B.Ed., MBA or M.Sc. in the field of their interest. They can start their own entrepreneurial ventures in bakery, confectionery, art and craft, dress designing, nursery school, crèche etc. The students can get job placements as dieticians with Hospitals or Health Clinics, as counsellors with Schools, Colleges, Hospitals or Senior Citizen Homes and as designers with Hosiery and Textile Industries. They can also be absorbed as journalists with Newspapers, Radio and Doordarshan as well as go in for any teaching, research or extension jobs.
