The Department of Electrical Engineering was established under College
of Agricultural Engineering with the objective of offering courses in the
discipline of Electrical and Electronics to the students of Agricultural
Engineering and cater to the needs of research in the area of Electrical and
Instrumentation Engineering. Later in the year 1972, M.Tech. programme in
Electrical Engineering was started with specialization in Instrumentation
Engineering and Systems & Control Engineering. Students were taught certain
aspects of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering applicable to
Agricultural Engineering which they can directly or indirectly apply in their
respective fields after graduating. With the emergence of computer discipline,
the department was renamed as Department of Computer Science and Electrical
Engineering (CSEE) in 1991 and M.Tech. programme in Computer Science and
Engineering was started in 1999. Two university level service units namely
Instrumentation Cell and Computer Center established under the control of Dean,
COAE&T were looked after by the departmental faculty.
The Department of Computer
Science and Electrical Engineering played a significant role in designing,
planning, procurement and deployment of campus wide optical fiber/wired network
to provide data connectivity which provides the campus wide internet and video
conferencing facility to faculty, staff and students of the university. The
smooth and effective working of this network is coordinated by the department.
The management, operation and maintenance of PAU telephone exchange (EPABX) are
also looked after by the department. Master of Computer Applications program was
started in the year 2009 after renaming Computer Center as School of Information
Technology (SIT). The Department of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering
and School of Information Technology were merged and renamed as School of
Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (SEEIT). It was rechristened
as Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DEEIT) in
2018.
Presently, DEEIT is engaged in offering courses to the undergraduate
students of all colleges of the university and postgraduate students of the
College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology. The department also offers
programmes in M.Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering) and Master of Computer
Applications. The primary objective of the department is academics and research
in allied agricultural fields in collaboration with other departments by
development and hosting of different softwares, portals, decision support
systems, mobile applications, etc. Other mandate is to provide basic IT services
to the university including email and information communication for data, voice
& video through University Data Centre. Wi-Fi connectivity and internet
facilities are provided to all hostels and buildings in the campus. The website
of the university (www.pau.edu) is also maintained by the data centre.
Maintenance of web server and remote access server is also under the purview of
data centre. The department has been imparting computer education to faculty,
staff and students of the university about the use of ICT tools. The department
has been adjudged the best emerging institute of CS & IT by RDS Media, New
Delhi. |
